Essential Jobs Checklist for Feb & March

  • Add well rotted compost, 'natures compost' or bark to mulch bare soil and let the worms do the work of pulling all the goodness down into last years soil

  • Continue to prune overgrown and late-flowering shrubs and roses

  • Cut back perennials and grasses that were left over winter

  • Divide overgrown clumps of perennials, luins, aneones, sanguisorba, danthus, euphobia

  • Dead-head daffodils and tie up the leaves and allow to die down, gaining strength for next year,Apply plant foods to established borders

  • Plant your favourite summer-flowering bulbs, try allium for height and Dahlia for an explosion of colour or even freesia for a sweet perfume in the garden or in a vase in your home

  • Sow hardy annuals out of doors use fresh top soil or compost mix

  • Continue sowing bedding plants and or tomatoes,herbs & winter greens   under cover on your kitchen window sill

  • Sow vegetables in prepared beds out of doors, Lettuce, salad leaves, radish, beetroots, spring onions and broad beans can all be sown leave 7 days between sowing to ensure you have plenty of food all summer not just in 1 week!

  • Plant potatoes in raised beds or pots

  • Protect fruit blossom from late frosts, use an old blanket, net curtain or fleece from packaging, or even bubble wrap

  • Treat moss on lawns and Re-seed bare patches on lawns, sprinkle some lawn mix soil

  • Begin watering cacti after the winter break

  • Check pond pumps and get them running

  • Birds still need plenty of food and fresh water, make 'fat balls' from meat, bacon juices and seeds wrapped in clingfilm and place in the freezer or fridge until set.
